As both a xerath & zed player, always try to harass him as he last hits, but keep in mind that zed farms very well under tower. don't shove him in and expose yourself to an early gank unless their jungler is visible elsewhere.. Don�t go your "original build" vs ad assasins either since rushing chalice vs rushing seekers will do quite a diffrence and try to get second blue to be able to depush zed. for "counterpicks" i have a hard time vs xerath, ww, mahlz and lissandra. bassicly anyone who can farm safe, which is why i don�t like playing vs xerath and mahlz..
